Renoir, Pierre-Auguste – Lithograph – Louis Valtat (D.;S.38)
Portrait of Louis Valtat, French Fauvist Painter, 1869-1952 and close friend of Renoir, aged 35 by Pierre Auguste-Renoir (French, 1841-1919), signed in stone, lithograph on paper 11 ¾” x 9 3/8”, from Douze Lithographies Originals de Pierre-August Renoir (D.; S.38), published by Ambroise Vollard. A comfortable and contemplative Valtat sits facing right with his right hand on the back of his chair, his arm and elbow braced over the edge.
It is thought that this portrait was sketched by Renoir during one of his visits to “Maison de la Poste”, a house he rented in Cagnes in 1903. It is documented that Valtat’s sketches of Renoir and Renoir’s painting “Portrait de Suzanne” (Suzanne being Valtat’s wife) were also done on this occasion.
