Description & Notes: Original moonscape painted by Brazilian post-impressionist painter Francisco Coculilo (1895-1978). The painter and critic Roberto Teixeira Leite wrote in the Critical Dictionary of Painting of Brazil, “his painting is unpretentious, portraying preferably the nature of Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings, in a … certain sensitivity.” Ostracized by Brazil’s elite for not eschewing nature for the Modernist abstract ideals Coculilo lived in relative obscurity from the cultivated world of Brazilian Fine Art. Since his death there has been a renewed interest in Coculilo’s authentic portrayal of Rio de Janeiro, particularly the honesty exposed in the web of foliage, sea, city, mountain, and sky.
