Gothic Revival Claret Jug
glass, sterling silver
12″ high x 4 1/4″ diameter x 5 3/4″ at handle
British Gothic Revival claret jug / decanter / carafe, 12 inches high x 4 ¼ inches in diameter x 5 ¾ inches across the handle, made by London silversmiths Jones & Willis Ltd., similar to designs by Christopher Dresser, circa 1925. The glass is attributed to Powell / Whitefriars Glass Co. which was known to supply glass to Jones & Willis Ltd.
The plain clear glass body of ovoid teardrop form on domed foot with upturned edge, is fitted with a sterling silver shaped sparrows beak pour spout with wide collar bordered by 15 concentric arrow head drops around its base and a hinged domed cover (with thumb lift) surmounted by a flat Medieval / Celtic circular cross. The jug is fitted with an impressive cast sterling silver c-scroll tapering handle beginning with a slightly compressed ball tip and ending with a notched flattened arrow head tail.
It is in Excellent Vintage Condition, the glass having no interior staining and the silver undamaged with an acquired nicely polished patina. The hallmarks are very lightly rubbed from polishing but fully legible as expected.
