SOLD – Life-Size Carving of a Human Skull
SculptureSOLD Hand carved wooden life sized adult human skull, with extremely accurate and fine detail, complete with lower mandible and the foramen magnum. There is a hole at the base of the skull where the spinal column connects allowing for display on a stand, if desired. It is carved from a single piece of golden coloured hardwood that has a dark central core and eight intentionally omitted teeth. Origin unknown. -

Soapstone – Isapic QANGUQ – Head with Braids
SculptureEarly soapstone carving by Isapic Qanguq (Mittimatalik, Pond Inlet, Baffin Island, b. 1918), disc # E5829, of a delicate head with carefully carved and fully reticulated serpentine braids buttressing the back of hood with the base of the skull. The work of Isapic Quanguq is included in The Chedoke Collection of Inuit Art and was recently exhibited at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in the exhibition titled ‘Carving Home.’ Quanguq is known for fine detailed carving with clearly delineated forms. -

SculptureJapanese black lacquerware plaque decorated with a gilt scene representing a view of Mt. Fuji as seen from the Fuji Five Lakes region. The scene is sparsely outlined in gilt and then many areas are set with beautiful mother-of-pearl inlay to highlight the whole. In the foreground a woman shading herself with an umbrella and sitting in a rickshaw or Jinrikisha is pulled along by a runner in front of one of the Lakes in the Fuji Five Lakes region (possibly Lake Kawaguchi). On the far shore on the right are buildings set on hilly terrain and in the center distance looming large over the entire scene is majestic Mt. Fuji. A long panel, set-up with hardware verso to be hung either horizontally or vertically, is decorated with a textural collage of impressed porcelain fragments, time-piece parts, brushed metal and polished pebbles. Horizontal metal bars divide the surface into five sections and the found and made pieces are carefully arranged, along with fractured metal discs, into a harmonious composition.
