Sold – Roseville / Weller – Vase – Mae Timberlake, LC Smith, Hunter Arms Co Trophy
Pottery, SOLDSOLD Roseville (American, Est. 1890) / Weller Pottery (American 1851-1948) Mae Timberlake L. C. Smith, Hunter Arms Co. First Price Class ‘A’ Trophy, c. 1900 Hand-Painted on Rozane Royal Ware 19” high x 7” diameter Notes: The story goes that “Mae was commissioned by Hunter Arms to decorate 3 pieces depicting the owner's hunting dogs [the Hunter Arms Trademark Springer Spaniel]. This is one of the original large vases. From this vase, by [Weller/Roseville] came numerous smaller versions of the vase [by both Roseville/Weller and Lenox] which were given as prizes to Hunter Arms employees.” And additionally, “These fine trophies were awarded to the trap shooter with the highest aggregate score of the year. See L. C. Smith, The Legend Lives by John Houchins.” A similar trophy in tankard form was featured in the 2011.02.20 PBS American Antiques Roadshow. Mae Timberlake decorated for both Roseville and Weller, in the Rozane and Standard glaze respectively as well as a variety of other styles.
