Founded in 1880 the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) received royal assent from Queen Victoria with Lucius O’Brien as their first President. Their objectives were: ‘First – the institution of a National Gallery at the seat of Government; Second – the holding of Exhibitions in the principal cities of the Dominion; and Third – the establishment of Schools of Art and Design.’ As Academicians joined they donated an example of their work to the National Gallery of Canada. Mary McCONNELL – Oil – Series of Stages
PaintingOriginal impressionist oil on canvas painting by listed Canadian artist M. Cary (Blyth) McConnell (fl. 1890-1940). The viewer is presented with a carefully cropped view of boathouses lining a waterfront with trees extending into a moody sky. Overcast yet decidedly still the painting anticipates the quiet before an approaching storm, the leaves above appear to be just starting to rustle while the waters are reflecting the buildings with unwavering reflection. Particularly striking is McConnell’s French modernist influence which can be seen in the colour treatment and execution in the paneled row.
