Description & Notes: An original Victorian ‘Queen Victoria’ Royal commemorative button badge, with paperback, made by Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, N.J., circa 1896. Whitehead & Hoag were the original inventors of the pinback and produced many examples of ‘Queen Victoria’.
This small button sized example illustrates a black and white printed image of an older Queen Victoria (1819-1901), identified in capital letters above. Her hand rests beside her face and she gazes to her right, our left, looking as regal and unamused as ever. This is protected with a thin sheet of celluloid and punched over a metal shell with an affixed open pin. The paperback Whitehead & Hoag patent label is intact verso.
Markings: titled on front bottom, “QUEEN VICTORIA”; patent date around side, “PAT. JULY 21, 1896”; original paper insert found in inside back, “THE / WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. / NEWARK, N.J. / PATENTED / JULY 17, 1894. / APRIL 14, 1896. / JULY 21, 1896.”
Dimensions: dm. 7/8” (22mm)
Condition: A period piece, it is offered in fine original condition, no damage, no repair. For accuracy only: there is a printed dot in the middle, this is in manufacture.
