A fine scarce American Arts & Crafts earthenware vase, shape no. 129, “tree-lined” decorative design no. 1241, designed by Frederick H. Rhead (1880-1942) for Avon Faience Co., Tiltonville, Ohio, United States (1902-1906), circa 1902-1903.
The spherical globular form with slightly raised round ring mouth (no. 129), made of a yellow/cream clay, is decorated in the slip-trailed “tree-lined” decoration (no. 1241) incorporating a stylized sunset landscape with tall skyward reaching limbed trees in front of a turquoise pond, dark wooded background, and field of orange indicative of a sky during sunset. The body is finished with a high-gloss glaze. The colour scheme and technique are instantly recognizable as a Rhead handiwork.
