Description: A fine American pastel painting by prominent Pennsylvania artist and art patron Alice Tyson (Butcher) Roberts (1876-1955), PAFA, OAA, NAWA, PCP, GCP, dated 1918.
Notes: In 1952 the Academy conferred honors at the years Exhibition to both Roberts, who won the Mary Smith Price for her sensitively handled Ipswich Semi Dance (the award restricted to women artists, of which she won twice in her career, the first time only 6 years after taking up painting!), and Andrew Wyeth, who won the Lippincott Price for realism. This, amongst numerous other distinctions (artistically and institutionally), clearly places Roberts within an established circle of American Fine Art. A painter and collector she donated numerous important artworks and historic textiles to Museums across the United States (under her married name Mrs. G. Briton Roberts), including The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum, NY.
