Well carved antique Victorian walking stick / dress cane with a figural and novel elephant ivory carved handle representing a hand, emerging from a mushroom shaped cap with frilled cuff, holding a debarked gnarled ivory shaft (3 3/8” l. x 1 1/8” d.) above a fitted sterling silver collar with repoussé decorated c-scroll foliage and a large “J” monogrammed cartouche (1 ¼” l.), appropriately hallmarked for London, sterling silver, 1898. The oak shaft has an elegant taper capped with a brass ferrule and a steel heel (1 3/8” l.)
Dimensions: 35 ¾” long
It is in Very Good Vintage Condition; For Accuracy only there is a very old repaired diagonal break extending 2 1/3” above the ferrule that has been glued and strengthened by a narrow, now well rusted, steel pin. The sterling collar has some damage, especially over the cartouche, and there is a very tight discoloured crack in the ivory along the ivory cap commensurate with age.
