Notes: Francis Russell Flint was born to an artistic family, son of the celebrated Scottish artist Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969), and, in addition to being an established marine artist in his own right, he shared an interest in Spanish scenes with his father. However, unlike his father, Francis’ approach tends to be more relaxed and natural rather than eroticized, a quirk called out by Sir William Russell Flints critics as diminishing to his talents.
This watercolor follows very much in the Spanish tradition, depicting a woman casually sewing on the terrazzo edge, it covered in lush foliage and overlooking the city, with a bridge / aqueduct extending to the right, and mountains and clear blue skies beyond. Notable is Flint’s use of light, colour and composition, as well as his mastery of the medium.
