Description: An original Italian School watercolour by Giovanni Battista (1858-1925), circa 1915.
Notes: Depicted is a classic Battista subject: a panoramic coastal scene, in this case the Amalfi Coast, with cliff side villages and wanderers. From the long shadows and misty air we know that it is early morning and people are just starting out on their daily travel/errands. Battista exhibits his talent in catching the atmospheric view by using light with diffused pastel colors to accentuate the seas mist as it covers the villages and steep roadway along the high shoreline. A large overhang of rock with dark green foliage adds contrast and stability and clearer inclination of the exotic coastlines of this region. Battista painted mostly scenes of Naples, Vesuvius, Venice and the Amalfi coast.
Markings: signed, “G Battista”
