(sight) 9 ½” Height x 10 ½” width
(framed) 11 ½” height x 13 ½” width
Original impressionist oil on canvas painting by listed Canadian artist M. Cary (Blyth) McConnell (fl. 1890-1940). The viewer is presented with a carefully cropped view of boathouses lining a waterfront with trees extending into a moody sky. Overcast yet decidedly still the painting anticipates the quiet before an approaching storm, the leaves above appear to be just starting to rustle while the waters are reflecting the buildings with unwavering reflection. Particularly striking is McConnell’s French modernist influence which can be seen in the colour treatment and execution in the paneled row.
