signed & dated lower right
(sight) 11 ½” high x 15 ½” wide
(framed) 15 ½” high x 19 ½” wide

Notes: Two figures rest in the tall grass beside a pathway along the ravine’s creek. Full foliage over hangs the path, tall trees extend into the background and a group of flowers are in focus in the lower right above the signature. While untitled, Hannaford is known to have favored painting in the Rosedale Ravine during the year of 1885; the landscape is similar therefore it is attributed to this area.

Condition: Excellent
For Accuracy: an Antique it may show expected light signs of age and use related wear. There is light even toning to the paper; this is uniform and does not detract form the display or integrity of the painting which retains strong colour.

Biography: HANNAFORD, Michael (1832 Stoke Gabriel, Devonshire, Eng. – 1891) Painter. Emigrated to New Zealand in youth where worked as painter and banker. In Toronto ager coming to Canada 1875. Principally w/c landscape painter, finding subject matter in Don Valley and Scarborough districts of Toronto, but also around Lake Simcoe, Ont., and in English coastal areas. Executed many popular marines which sold widely throughout Ont. Elected ARCA 1880. Member of OSA 1875-91. Exhibited: AAM 1883; OSA 1876-91; RCA 1880-91; TIE 1881-93; COLL: TPL; Hughes; NGC files; Wallace (Source: Harper)
