Notes: Instantly recognizable as by Yvonne Housser, with the close inward cropped framing and attention to the vernacular within the wild, this watercolour and ink depicts a black family in the American south. Located within the title as ‘Georgia’ a young family pose in front of their home along with a couple of free range chickens within the surrounding foliage.

Markings: signed lower left, ‘“YVONNE McK.’ / ‘HOUSSER.’; signed and titled on the reverse with the original asking price (mid 20th Century), ‘Yvonne McK. Housser’ / ‘FAMILY IN GEORGIA’ / ‘$25.00’

Condition: Excellent, matted and framed behind glass.

Artist Biography: Yvonne McKague Housser (Canada, 1898-1996) CM, RCA, CGP, FCA, OSA. Founding member of the Canadian group of Painters and the Federation of Canadian Artists. Housser studied at the Ontario College of Art under George Reid and J W Beatty, at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Academie Colarossi, and Academie Ranson. Taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design, the Doon School of Fine Arts, and Ryerson University. Inivted to exhibit with the Group of Seven on several occasions Housser would join them and be a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters.
