Description

Japanese black lacquerware plaque decorated with a gilt scene representing a view of Mt. Fuji as seen from the Fuji Five Lakes region. The scene is sparsely outlined in gilt and then many areas are set with beautiful mother-of-pearl inlay to highlight the whole. In the foreground a woman shading herself with an umbrella and sitting in a rickshaw or Jinrikisha is pulled along by a runner in front of one of the Lakes in the Fuji Five Lakes region (possibly Lake Kawaguchi). On the far shore on the right are buildings set on hilly terrain and in the center distance looming large over the entire scene is majestic Mt. Fuji.

Unsigned, circa late 19th century, Meiji Period (1868-1912), it is large and measures 17 7/8” high x 11 ¼” wide.

It is in Excellent Vintage Condition with no loss or damage to the mother-of-pearl inlay. There is no warping of the plaque as it is structurally re-enforced by two narrow horizontal wooden strips verso. For Accuracy Only: there is some minor lacquer loss along the extremities and some very light scattered surface scratches that do not penetrate the lacquer, these are both commensurate with the age of this plaque as it is antique.
