Soapstone – Isapic QANGUQ – Head with Braids

Early soapstone carving by Isapic Qanguq (Mittimatalik, Pond Inlet, Baffin Island, b. 1918), disc # E5829, of a delicate head with carefully carved and fully reticulated serpentine braids buttressing the back of hood with the base of the skull. The work of Isapic Quanguq is included in The Chedoke Collection of Inuit Art and was recently exhibited at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in the exhibition titled ‘Carving Home.’ Quanguq is known for fine detailed carving with clearly delineated forms.
