Description & Notes: Contemporary Czech crystal glass sculpture by award winning artist Blanka Adensamová (b. 1949), c. 1985. Blanka perfected the sculptural processes of moulded glass in the 1970s and continues further dialogues with the medium to International acclaim. This ‘Leaf’ sculpture, from the same series represented in the permanent collection of the Corning Museum of Glass, investigates contrasts: “constructivism vs. shapelessness, materialism vs. idealism.”
The Process: a moulded form is created from clay in which is poured molten subtly-colored aqua crystal, it is removed and a leaf impression made at the top; the body is then worked with cutting, polishing, etching and engraving and fitted with a reflective square chrome plinth. The latent light properties of the leaf are further revealed through the material transparency and contrasted from the high polished body with a further matte treatment.
The artistic success is achieved and unified through the tensions between the continuous interplay of parts: the natural geometric properties of the “light impression,” the shapeless plasticity of the sculptural mould, the minimalist form vs. structural complexity, the environmental and manufactured undertones of modernity – a perfect subject for our climate and a masterful expression of artistic technique.
