Steuben Glass Works (United States, Est. 1903)
‘2678’ Vase
Calcite / Aurene
8″ high x 6″ wide
Description: Carder era Art Deco floriform trumpet vase (no. 2678) in calcite glass lined with a gold Aurene interior, made by Steuben Glass Works, circa 1920s. All pieces of shape no. 2678 are individually blown and made and therefore unique – note that this example is joined to the foot with a double knop, in variation of the usual single.
Notes: The stylized body is reminiscent of the delicate forms found in nature, such as those in the (white flower), with ruffles, subtle gradients, and fine textures. The ever so transparent white ‘Ivorene’ glass is carefully iridized in the same technique used in Steuben’s much loved Aurene glass. These points of detail were a conscious effort that Carder undertook to differentiate Steuben as Art Glass rather than glassware. He wrote, “Glass should be transparent or translucent – not opaque!”
Dimensions: 8” high x 6” wide
Markings: unsigned, polished pontil, well-documented form
Literature: Gardner, ‘The Glass of Frederick Carder’; Ketchum, ‘Frederick Carder’s Steuben Glass’
Condition: Very Good Vintage Condition. For accuracy: there is a single ¾” scratch on the interior, this is not visible unless looking down into the vase as shown in the third photo (interior, lower right side) and even then only when seeking it out. Else this vase is in excellent vintage condition with fine colour and refined form.
