Monart Range (1924-1939; 1947-1961)
Paisley Shawl Vase, UA VII, c. 1926
jade green, white, grey, blue and clear glass
9” high
Description: An early Scottish Monart Paisley Shawl glass vase, shape UA, size VII, decorated with whorling white with hints of blue, over a jade green and clear cased body and grey iridized finish. Supposedly this iridescence wasn’t intentional but an unexpected byproduct of the gas used during production, after 1926 the gas company sorted out the issue and the iridescence disappeared from the glass.
The glassworks were a family affair and both the Moncrieff (Paul and Isobel) and Ysart (Salvador and Paul Ysart) families were involved in range production, colour combinations, and form design; while executed by Ysart this piece was likely designed by Isobel. The high quality Monart range was retailed at leading shops such as Liberty’s and Tiffany & Co. The Spanish Ysart was a master glassblower who worked at major French glasshouses such as Schneider before moving to Scotland.
