Description

Description & Notes: Venetian Renaissance Revival glass wine goblet, blown and rib-molded, and decorated with incised gold leaf and polychrome enamel medallions and highlights, in the manner of Francesco Toso Borella, for Salviati & Co. In the tradition of Borella’s workshop the craftsmanship and attention to detail distinguish this goblet from . Borella pieces were displayed in the exhibition at the Getty: Reflecting Antiquity, Modern Glass Inspired by Ancient Rome, and reside in the collection of The Corning Museum of Glass.

This brilliant three-piece emerald green glass goblet features a rib-blown bowl for handling, an elegant taper for a controlled containment and pour, an applied hollow blown stem, and applied foot with rolled lip. The body presents two historically significant hand-enameled portrait medallions, Alvise I Mocengio and Francesco Morosini, one either-side, and joined within an intricate incised gold foil scrolling frieze with rose garlands and identifying banners. The ribs, lip and foot are sympathetically gilt and enameled illustrative of the sophisticated attention to detail expected from the Venetian artists and respectful of the importance of the represented personalities.

Painted by the likes of Tintoretto, among others, Alvise I Mocengio was the doge of Venice from 1570-1577. The Morcengio Family was well established producing seven doges with ties to the Pope.

Condition: Very Good Vintage Condition – no damage, no repair. For accuracy there is some extremely light rubbing to the gilt, this is expected and not damage, it is a testament to authenticity.
