Jose Anton (Mexican, 20th Century)
Amethyst Brooch, c. 1930’s-40’s
amethyst, sterling silver
5/8″ long x 1/2″ high
This is an early Mexican sterling silver and amethyst brooch by noted Taxco silversmith Jose Anton. The simple near square shape, 1 1/16 inches high x 1 ⅛ inches wide, has a large cut amethyst stone, 5/8” l. x. ½” h., raised on an elaborate pedestal and held in place by eight prongs / claws. Made during the pre-eagle period, circa 1930’s-1940’s. It has a tube hinge pin with c-clasp and is impressed up-side-down below the stones window: Anton / Sterling / Taxco / Mexico. Excellent.
