Chrysanthemum Vase, Celadon Ground, c. 1910
polychrome enamel, silver
12” high x 6 3/8” diameter
An impressive Japanese cloisonné vase by the Ando Cloisonné Company of Nagoya, Japan, made c. 1910. An early example, the large baluster body is decorated with a floral arrangement of prunis and chrysanthemum blossoms carefully situated amidst foliage on a celadon enamel ground. Executed with finesse the bold colours are applied with carefully shaded gradients providing life and depth to the complex arrangement.
Markings: Ando yusen mark on base and jungin mark on the rim
Condition: Antique
For Accuracy: an antique it is in near mint condition other than a bruise on the shoulder which is shown clearly in the photographs. Variations of the Chrysanthemum pattern have been created by the Ando company throughout the 20th century however this example exhibits a greater intricacy, a greater size, and a scare traditional and refined celadon ground.
