Albertus Johan Neuhuys (1844-1914)
‘The New Doll’
watercolour on paper, heightened with white
(Actual): 16 ¾” high x 13” wide
(Framed): 23 ¾” high x 20 ¼” wide
Description: A fine original Albertus Johan Neuhuys (Dutch, 1844-1914), Hague School watercolour on paper. Neuhuys captures the pivotal moment of exchange when the infant is transfixed by both the object and the gesture. The emotive action is illuminated by natural light and heightened in white. The background is atypical for Neuhuys as there is little delineation between imagined indoor and outdoor space.
Notes: The studio setting indicates this is likely a portrait commissioned by a wealthy patron. It is executed with a mastery of composition, light and colour.
Markings: signed lower right, “Alb. Neuhuys”
Medium: watercolour over coloured charcoal on paper laid down on board, heightened with white
(Actual): 16 ¾” high x 13” wide
(Framed): 23 ¾” high x 20 ¼” wide
Condition: Excellent – Ready for Display.
For Accuracy: The frame shows light signs of wear to the extremities, as expected on a vintage/antique item. See Photographs.

Artist Biography: Albertus Johan Neuhuys (Dutch, 1844-1914) The Hague School. This artist has remarkably awakened the tradition of the best Dutch Masters. Along with Israelis and Jacob Husbands, Neuhuys paintings honestly represent peaceful Dutch interiors, the grace of children and particularly the charm of young mothers. Neuhuys paintings particularly capture the light and hair of the children illuminated by rays from the narrow windows. The intensity of expressions and delicacy found in many of the works of the Masters has successfully been sought by Neuhuys, a refined artist. (Summarized from the French, Benezit 1999)
