‘Waves on Breakwall’
oil on artistboard
6 ⅛” high x 8 ⅛” wide
9” high x 11” wide
Description & Notes: Original oil on card painting entitled, ‘Waves on Breakwall’ by Scottish artist James Bell Anderson (1886-1938). The clouds are darkening along the left and the waves are beginning to roll in and crash against a breakwall; one yacht along the horizon is caught out in the weather and the other two are still running ahead under the still blue sky; seven birds are fishing in the churn. At the end of the wall, where the sea meets the land, is a wooden hitch in the form of a cross.
An accomplished artist Anderson is shown to have painted in a broad range of subject matter outside of his specialty of portraiture and interior painting and can exhibit a near photographic quality. This scene is possibly of Dublin Bay where he is known to have painted the sea.
Markings: signed lower right, “J. B. ANDERSON”
Condition: A period piece, it is offered in very good original condition. For Accuracy Only: the there is a single tiny paint fleck middle left, else it is excellent with wear commensurate with age. A previous owner has sympathetically remounted it on painted white masonite, in new frame.
