John Bell (fl. 1850-1880)
Untitled: Morning at the Well, Northern Italy
oil
(Sight):11 ½” high x 17 ½” wide
Description: A fine John Bell (fl. 1850-1880) Italian oil painting entitled ‘Morning at the Fountain.’
Notes: This is likely an actual location, rather than a cappricio, as Bell’s artworks are often titled with areas in the North of Italy (Magadino, Laggo Maggiore, Lake Orta); it is possibly a combination of the two genres. The painting depicts a group of townsfolk and passers-by collecting around the local water well during the early hours of the morning. The well is surrounded by old Architectural ruins and lush overgrowth, with a villa aqueduct, lake, river, water fall and mountains in the distance.
Markings: signed lower left, “John Bell”; brass tag on frame bottom center, “JOHN BELL”
Condition: Excellent – Ready for Display.
For Accuracy: The frame shows light signs of wear to the extremities, as expected on a vintage/antique item. See Photographs.
