Description: Original Canadian School oil on board painting titled, ‘Outlet of Larsen Lake, Armour Township, District of Parry Sound, Ontario’ by well-listed and respected artist Lawrence Nickle (1931-2014), circa May 1995. A ‘light’ obsessive, Lawrence painted the Northern Ontario landscape in the thick of it – en plein air. The small panel, a standard size for Nickle, effectively conveys the atmosphere, as well as the imagery, of Larsen Lake. The application of paint is organic as if the artwork was grown on the board directly from the surrounding environment.
Shown is a cropped corner outlet of Larsen Lake in Parry Sound; a wild grouping of conifers reflect in the shallows amongst fallen scrub and vegetation along the waters edge. The scene is instantly recognizable as what one may run across in the back woods whilst hiking or canoeing.

Artist Biography: NICKLE, Lawrence (1931-2014). Born in Toronto, Ontario, he graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1954. He lived in Kenora and Dryden, Ontario, with his wife Olga and taught on a anorthern Ontario Indian reserve. In 1965 the Nickles went to Europe where they visisted galleries and Lawrence painted. Returning to Canada they lived at South Porcupine and later Wawa. Working water colours, oils and acrylics he has painted the landscape of Northern Ontario often in the company of artist Michael Cleary; both men are full-time painters. His outdoor work is done in oils on wooden panels, his larger canvases in acrylics and he sometimes works in water colours to keep his approach fresh. He has exhibited his work in Calgary, Montreal, Buffalo and in Ontario at Liz’s Boutique, Birk’s Falls (1970); Markham Cenennial Library (1970); the Public Library, Sault Ste. Marie (1971) and the Muskoka Arts & Crafts Exhibition. He has taught painting to private groups and to night classes in high schools at Wawwa, Sutton, Newmaket, King City, Markham, North York and a workshop at Bracebridge, Lies with his wife at Huntsville.
