Description: An original Graham Noble Norwell (Canadian, 1901-1967) OSA, watercolour depicting a  grouping of cabins in the Laurentians in Winter, c. 1930-1967.

Markings: signed, l.r. “NORWELL”

Artist Biography: NORWELL, Graham Noble (Canada, 1901-1967) OSA. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1901, moved to Canada in 1914. In 1920, Norwell travelled to South American, Europe and the United States. It was during a visit to Greenwich Village in New York City that he became interested in art. When he returned to Canada he enrolled at OCAD, Toronto, where he studied under Arthur Lismer, G. A. Reid, J.W. Beatty and Robert Holmes. After a year at the college he travelled to Paris and the London where he studied with Augustus John. In 1922, Norwell moved to the United States and was hired by an industrial firm as a commercial artist. He soon returned to Canada and moved to Ottawa and in 1924 he was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists. Norwell was best known for his landscape paintings. He worked in both oils and watercolours and exhibited at many of the major galleries, including the Johnson Art Galleries, Montreal; Montreal Museum of Fine Art, Montreal. Collections Hart House, University of Toronto, Toronto; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
