Otto Planding (Canadian, 1887-1964)
Ontario Winter Landscape
oil painting, signed
(actual): 18” high x 26” wide
(framed): 25 ¾” high x 34” wide
An expansive winter landscape oil painting by listed and well known artist Otto Planding (Canada, 1887-1964), appropriately signed lower right, c. 1940. Well composed with a carefully chosen palette, and likely painted plein air, it captures the refreshing crisp air on a winter’s day in early evening; this is one of his nicer works. From an elevated perspective, the viewer looks through birch and pine, across a mountain lake and towards the distant forested shore, all under a clear light blue sky with light wispy clouds. Planding works are sought out for their ability to capture the familiar feel of Northern Ontario; this work particularly illustrates his ability to apply paint with accomplishment and finesse.
