Otto Planding (Canadian, 1887-1964)
Cabin in Winter
oil painting, signed
8″ x 11″
Original oil on board painting of a cabin in winter by listed Canadian artist Otto Planding, circa 1940. An itinerant artist, Planding travelled across the country painting commissions for local and wealthy patrons becoming a known and respected feature in many collections across the country. Planding’s works are especially sought out for their ability to capture the familiar feel of Northern Ontario; this work illustrates his consistent ability to apply paint with accomplishment and finesse.
Well composed with a carefully chosen palette, and likely painted en plein air, this example captures the refreshing crisp air on a winter’s day. From a grounded perspective, this winter landscape shows a log cabin nestled into a grouping of tall conifers in an expansive northern vista. A snow covered cottage is situated beside a small stream that leads through the countryside towards a distant lake; a second cottage can be seen on the left and distant hills roll across the horizon. A clear day, the light reflects up off the snow and shimmers around the environment in crisp bright colours.
