John Hopewell (England, act. 1852)
Robin & Dove Urn Vase, c.1867
gilt, jeweled, hand-painted, porcelain
6” high x 6” wide
Notes: An English porcelain figural dove vase in glazed white parian with jewelled and gilt detailing, made at Royal Worcester Porcelain Co. (England, 1862-1978) circa 1867. Modelled as a figural dove with an urn attached to its back with a light blue ribbon. The back of the urn is finely hand-painted with a little robin sitting on a branch.
The painting draws from work accomplished by John Hopewell at the Worcester Binns & Kerr factory (England, 1852-1862). The finesse of the bird and foliage affords closer attention to detailing than most later examples, indicating the artist is either Hopewell himself or an accomplished artist that had the finesse to warrant work on higher quality jewelled lines of porcelain.
Markings: impressed on base of tail with 1st registration diamond, code letter “T” for 1867; also impressed is the standard round factory mark , 4 conjoined “w’s” circling a central no. 51 topped by a crown ; impressed on base of branch is a half moon, followed by “x”; hand-painted on base of other branch “166 / D”
Condition: Antique, Very Good
For Accuracy: the antique vase may show expected light sign of wear commensurate with age. The tail to one ribbon has been carefully conserved by a previous owner (see picture). As mentioned in the notes the painting is extremely fine and the figural presentation and jeweled detailing very attractive.
