Art Deco Butterflies, circa 1921-1941
Lustre Ware Box
5 ⅛” Diameter x 5 ⅝” Height
Markings: red “M in Wreath” backstamp
Description & Notes: Old Noritake Fancy Ware dresser jar decorated with Art Deco flying butterflies on a sky blue lustre ground, made circa 1921-1941. The exaggerated baluster form is further defined by the black trim and removable domed lid with figural apple blossom finial and enameled green leaves.
Novel figural Art Deco lusterware was exported by the Morimura Brothers of Nagoya, Japan, under the trade name Noritake, and began distinguishing itself against other often lower quality Nippon and Noritake from earlier periods (and later). These pieces, highly priced by collectors (some Super Deco can fetch in the multiple thousands today), include figural flappers, clowns, birds, animals, flowers and other whimsies popular within the period.
Condition: Vintage; Excellent
