Description

Rare Nita DesBarres (1900-1976) studio pottery vase, Pictou, Nova Scotia, circa 1950s.

Self identified as the ‘Mad Potter’ due to her love of the art form, she threw her own pots and devised her own glazes. A devotee to Arts & Crafts she is also credited as likely being the first woman engraver & jewellery designer for Birks. (Many Thanks to the McCulloch Heritage Centre)

The globular form has a concentrically textured orange clay exterior with a short raised cylindrical neck banded with a glossy turquoise bordered with a glossy row of white & black separated by matte orange.

Biography:  Schooling: Mount Allison, Sackville; Lancaster, Pennsylvania (engraving); New York (weaving). Employment: Birks, Halifax (1st woman engraver; jewellery designer); Warp & Woof, Chester, NS. DesBarres Studio.
