Mythological Scene (Persephone & Hermes)

Summary: Griffen, Smith & Bell Etruscan majolica plate featuring a central neo-classical style plaque in glossy green glaze, surrounded by a glossy pink glazed basket weave border interrupted with five equidistant palmettes, the reverse undecorated and glazed in a deep glossy blue, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, circa 1879-1885. These plates are commonly found in one colour and occasionally found in a two colour variation – this tri-colour glaze is scarce.
The mythology depicted is unclear and could be one of a few possibilities, after-all Hermes/Mercury is a messenger and carries around more than one individual for many reasons. It can be clear that this is Hermes, given the winged sandals and hat but the identity of the second figure is unclear as it has few attributes other than being scantily clad from the waist up with hair formally bound, and drapery flowing behind. The most likely candidate is Persephone, whom Hermes escorts back from Hades at the request of Zeus by the behest of Demeter. Larunda and Tanagra are other possibilities but their mythology is less developed and unlikely to be chosen as a decorative motif intended for a broad audience. The bound hair also points to a formal figure rather than Naiad, whom are typically depicted with hair irresistibly unbound.

Condition: Antique, Very Good Condition.
For Accuracy: an antique it may show expected light signs of age. There is an old chip at the edge at the underside, this is a surface abrasion and may be a glaze skip. This tri-colour variation is scarce.
