Description: American Art Pottery double Rebecca vase covered in a turquoise glaze, attributed to the Cole Potters of North Carolina, circa early-to-mid 20th Century.
The round ovoid body has an everted neck and a compressed mouth at the handles; the over-arched slightly over-shot handles start at the shoulders, loop over and are attached straight down either side the rim.
Notes: Firm attributions to specific makers (ie. Nell Cole or JB Cole) are very difficult and are often disputed among experts. As Evertte James wrote in his introduction to North Carolina Art Pottery, “Knowledge about North Carolina art pottery is an evolving process. A ‘truth’ widely accepted today may be dismissed tomorrow in light of new data.” This is of course half the fun of North Carolina potters; most of their ware is unsigned and the forms are variations on traditional themes.
Dimensions: 10 ¾” High; 6” Diameter
Markings: unsigned
Condition: Very Good Vintage Condition – no damage, no repair.
For Accuracy Only: there are two glaze skips near the foot, these are from production and not damage, and there is some light crazing as is common with this glaze. Overall: the vase is excellent with a fine form and colour.
