Description

Classic Arts & Crafts American art pottery vase of high quality, 8 ¼” x 3 ¼”, made by William J. Walley (1852-1919) at the Walley Pottery (1898-1919), West Sterling, Massachusetts, signed. Made of red clay the tapering cylindrical form has sharply angled narrow shoulders, a small mouth with everted lip and is covered with a green matte glaze. The mouth of the vase deliberately lacks glaze to further emphasize the form. The impressed Walley signature, consisting of the upper case letters “WJW”, is strongly stamped under glaze on the base, the concave base of the vase being glazed while the base edge is not.

Markings: stamped on base with “WJW” brand
Dimensions: 8 ¼” tall x 3 ¼” widest diameter

Condition: Excellent Vintage Condition (8): Walley items are often found with shallow surface chips on the base that are common and known to be stilt marks. This base has one very shallow surface chip that we definitely ascribe as being a stilt mark with surface tear. There is another very shallow surface chip ¼” x 3/8” that coincides with the glaze on the concave base and is not visible on its exterior, another common occurrence on Walley Pottery
