Description: A fine early pen & ink sketch of a herdsman with cattle attributed to the listed artist James Ward (England, 1769-1859) RA by Andrew Wilton, Curator of Prints & Drawings, Yale Centre for British Arts, an expert on both James Ward and J.M.W. Turner.
Markings: early hand-inscribed paper affixed verso, “Property of: [Private Collection]” // “Pen & ink sketch of cows, attributed to J.M.W. Turner,” / “more probably a work by James Ward. Consult Andrew Wilton,” / “Curator of Prints & Drawings, Yale Centre for British Arts.”; inscribed on second piece of paper affixed verso, “From information supplied — ought by C. C. Johnston at the J.M.W. Turner sale (London) — Rev. Johnston of Weston, Ont., & from him to his —, C.F., Toronto, by when it was sold to R. McAusland Toronto 1912.”
