Birks (Canada, Est. 1879)
Arts & Crafts Bowl, c. 1941
Pierced Sterling Silver Side-walls, Cobalt Glass Liner
4 ½” diameter x 2 ¼” high
89.7 grams (silver only, this does not include the glass liner)
Notes: Brought up from a single sheet of sterling silver the deep bowl with gently sloping sides displays a symmetrical repeating band of alternating single rose and pierced “I” trellis with vining roses, under a wide embossed gadrooned lip with rolled rim, and raised on a short integral foot. The interior is lined with a removable cobalt glass liner, this appears original.
Markings: Base is impressed near the top, “BIRKS / [Pseudo-marks for 1941] / STERLING” and “33/53” near the base.
Condition: Vintage, Excellent.
For Accuracy Only: there may be minimal signs of light use commensurate with age: the cobalt liner has a minuscule flea bite just under the rim on one side and a surface flake on the other, both of these are on the outside of the glass – one is completely invisible when the liner is situated properly and the other can just barely be noted under close inspection. The warm rich patina has been only lightly polished to preserve the original patina for generations to come.
