A Scottish Georgian George IV sterling silver Kings Pattern toddy ladle, 6 inches long x 1 ¾ inches in diameter (bowl), made in Edinburgh by probably James McKay but possibly John McDonald in 1823-24.
The ladle is single-struck with shells & scrolls on the front of the stem end, with shoulders near the bowl and a single drop / heel at the underside of the bowl and it is top / tail marked with the following five touchmarks / hallmarks:
– “JMC.” Makers mark probably James McKay but possibly John McDonald
– monarchs head – duty mark (George IV)
– tower – mark for Edinburgh
– thistle – mark for Scotland
– “r” – date code for 1823-24
It weights 34 grams / 1.09+ troy ounces. A toddy Ladle is a utensil with short, curved stem and wide, lipped bowl for serving toddy or punch.
CONDITION: The ladle is a very good gauge of silver, very good colour, in excellent condition with clear touchmarks and not monogrammed. The hallmarks struck to the reverse are very clear.
