Description & Notes: Elaborately cast sterling silver spoon made by John Maitland Talbot, Edinburgh, c. 1900. The finial is fashioned into a reticulated rocaille flourish with scrolling stem, acanthus shoulder drop and bowl further decorated with a pair of deep relief thistles. Talbot established his carrier on quality craftsmanship and worked with some of the finest Irish and Scottish Arts and Crafts artists. His caddy spoons can fetch hundreds of pounds.
Why does this spoon not have a Lion Passant sterling silver purity mark? In three words – “Because it’s Edinburgh.” The Triple Crown mark is used as the town mark and, until 1976 the Fiercely independent Scottish capital used the Thistle mark to declare purity.
