SUMMARY: The Original James Lorimer Keirstead oil on board painting titled, ‘Janice’s Mill’, by the listed Canadian artist. Originally painted in 1984, it was resigned a second time in 1987 when used in the Sisters Plate Series of Collector’s Plates.
Depicted is a grist mill and water wheel, next to a steam in autumn. Composed from memory, it incorporates elements from “a lifetime of mill observing. The combination of rugged stone and weathered boards in the walls has always attracted Keirstead. The open extension housing the sawmill is reminiscent of McIntosh and Bellrock Mills, both in Ontario. The stone wall and wooden wheel were inspired by Robin’s Mill at Black Creek Pioneer Village.” It is named after Keirstead’s daughter, Janice.
