Artist Biography: Alfred Robert Quinton (England, 1853-1934). Watercolour Artist. Born in Peckham London, 28 October 1853, Quinton studied painting at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and worked as a steel engraver while experimenting in oils and eventually settling into life as a watercolour artist, c. 1874. Achieving a degree of commercial success in his time he would travel for part of the year taking sketches and photographs of the countryside, usually by bicycle, and work these into completed paintings at his studio in London. Exhibitions include the Ipswich Fine Art Club, Birmingham Royal Society of British Artists; Dudley Gallery; Dowdeswell Gallery; Grosvenor Gallery; Liverpool Walker Art Gallery; Manchester City Art Gallery; Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists. Despite being banned by the Royal Academy for commercializing his art into postcards and books he was patronized by the Duke and Duchess of Kent who purchased two of his paintings.
