James Beattie (Scottish 1735-1803) was a Scottish poet, musician, moralist and philosopher. He was a known abolitionist, a professor at Marischal College (Aberdeen University); a member of the Aberdeen Musical Society, co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) and an elected member of the American Philosophical Society (APS).
