Notes: A scarce Art Deco art glass ‘Atlas’ vase in smoky topaz, made by Saxon Glassworks, August Walther & Söhne, 1933. Available in the 1933 & 1934 catalogues, the ‘Atlas’ range service is described as “Atlas precious glass, toughened glass” and offered in a variety of presentation bowls and a vase, this being the only vase, shape no. 42905.
The heavy moulded glass, of deep slightly tapering cylindrical form with everted mouth and flat cut base, is in the sultry smoky topaz only offered in 1933. The dynamic and continuous infinity pattern of interconnected spheres is high deco with deep surface treatment alternating between smooth fluid geometric spheres and a deeply textured ground.
Markings: Unsigned, well-documented form. The catalogue and references in Pressed Glass Correspondence from 2001-2006, state that it “lacks the marks of the pattern book”, later examples of Atlas bowls exist with the embossed words “BELGIQUE” and it is speculated that another company purchased the molds post-war. This vase has no marks, a superb mold and colour and is from early original Walther & Söhne production.

Condition: A period piece, it is offered in superb original condition – no damage, no repair. For accuracy only there some roughness to the ground base, this is from the original grind itself and a common condition of manufacture.
