Description: A period Art Deco ‘Forest Tree,’ blue ground, pattern 3253, vase of 3/9001 form, made at Carlton Ware (England, Est. 1890) circa the mid-late 1920’s or early 1930’s. One of the high styled Fantasy Designs it utilizes the intricacy of pattern, colour, texture, and form to present an exciting yet refined artistic composition that appeals to the imagination.
A study in contrasts, the design, reminiscent of Klimt’s neo-impressionist Forest paintings or Makeig-Jones’ art nouveau Fairyland Lustre series, is a tranquil landscape of shimmering light within a birch wood.
Gold is used to define and animate the softly textured contrasting glaze colours of orange and blue, white and black, and green and red into the recognizable bodies of land, shrubs, trees, and canopy. The asian phoenix-tail or yen-yen baluster form, is finished with a band of solid gilt around the rim and foot, providing solidity, and further finished at the everted mouth with an organized display of repeating roundels.
