Roseville (American, Est. 1890) / Weller Pottery (American 1851-1948)
Mae Timberlake
L. C. Smith, Hunter Arms Co.
First Price Class ‘A’ Trophy, c. 1900
Hand-Painted on Rozane Royal Ware
19” high x 7” diameter
Notes: The story goes that “Mae was commissioned by Hunter Arms to decorate 3 pieces depicting the owner’s hunting dogs [the Hunter Arms Trademark Springer Spaniel]. This is one of the original large vases. From this vase, by [Weller/Roseville] came numerous smaller versions of the vase [by both Roseville/Weller and Lenox] which were given as prizes to Hunter Arms employees.” And additionally, “These fine trophies were awarded to the trap shooter with the highest aggregate score of the year. See L. C. Smith, The Legend Lives by John Houchins.”
Mae Timberlake decorated for both Roseville and Weller, in the Rozane and Standard glaze respectively as well as a variety of other styles. Some reputable sources state this is Roseville and others Weller, either way it stands apart for provenance and presentation.
Condition: Excellent
For Accuracy: an Antique it may show expected light signs of age and use related wear. There is some extremely light cracklure to the surface which is common on all three known examples of the 19” size, and the script has worn some from age. A superb example of L C Smith memorabilia.
