‘Chateau de Ramezay, Montreal’
etching, aquatint
(image): 4 ⅛” high x 5 ⅞” wide
(frame): 8 9/16” x 6 9/16”
Notes: Scarce coloured Post-Expressionist etching of the historic Chateau de Ramezay, Montreal, during winter, by well respected Canadian Hungarian artist Nicholas Hornyansky (1896-1965).
The etching depicts a three-quarter view of the Chateau including the lively city life outside the guides, of people, horses, sleds, caleches and cars, all covered in a fresh layer of snow. Like all Hornyansky etchings a sense of eternal calm is conveys through the sketchy lines, the soft light, and the subdued colours.
