Modernist ‘Orb’ Vase
green glaze
5 ¼” high x 6 ¾” diameter
Description & Notes: A fine Mid-Century spherical vase with sharp inward shoulder, kicked collar and translucent lightly crackled emerald green high-gloss glaze, made by Herman August Kähler, Nestved, Denmark, circa 1930s-40s. At once playful, modern, traditional and functional Kähler makes full use of the elements of design with minimal effort to create this piece of Danish Modern art pottery. This vase can also be found in the iconic Kähler red.
Given the Kähler red variation it is unclear whether this was designed by Nils Kähler (Denmark, 1906-1979) / for Herman Hans Christian Kähler (Denmark, 1876-1940) or whether it is was designed by Karl Hansen Reistrup (Denmark, 1863-1929) for Herman August Kähler (Denmark, 1846-1917), c. 1900, when Kähler red was in high form. It is possible it is also an early form that was kept in production through the Art Deco, Modernist, and Mid-Century Periods given the adaptability of the forms design principles.
