‘Chang’ Bowl, 7841, c. 1925-1935
heavily glazed coarse earthenware
2 5/8” high x 5” diameter
Notes: Period Art Deco ‘Chang’ bowl, made at Royal Doulton by Charles Noke and Harry Nixon, c. 1925-1935. The low shallow form bowl has a scalloped mouth and collar foot, it is adorned with mutton fat crusting around the shoulder, sidewalls, and foot, revealing white, red, yellow, orange, blue and green crackled and bubbled glazes.
Chang ware was a development by Charles Noke during the exciting period of innovation that also brought with it the ‘Sung’ and ‘Jade’ lines at Doulton during the early 1920’s. Recognizable by its thick dripping glaze, flambé, colourful mottling and deep textural cracklure the artful ‘Chang’ pieces excite the viewer with much perceptible detail.
Markings: Royal Doulton Chang mark; Charles Noke signature; Harry Nixon monogram; impressed 7841
Condition: Vintage, Excellent
For Accuracy: a vintage vessel it may show expected honest signs of age such as light shelf-wear. There is a chip on the foot of the bowl, unseen from the top, that is either early or occurred at the factor and is not being considered damage; these are fairly seen on these and not unusual. The form and glaze are very fine. See photographs.
