SUMMARY: Rare British pottery raised and handled ‘trophy bowl’ decorated in the ‘Pomegranate’ pattern, designed by William Moorcroft (1872-1945) for Moorcroft Pottery (est. 1897), Burslem, Stroke-on-Kent, Staffordshire, England, 1913-1918.
DESCRIPTION: A popular and desirable pattern this ‘Pomegranate’ example is found in a rare kylix or ‘trophy bowl’ form; the circular bowl with raised sides, is flanked by two delicate protruding curled-D handles, and supported aloft on a tall round pedestal foot. The interior is elaborately decorated with a ring of five large pomegranates on a bed of leaves and berries; the motif echoed in a wreath around the foot.
NOTES: This early 20th Century design is reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelite School and draws the British Arts & Crafts safely into the 20th Century. It is well-suited for incorporation into any interior.
MARKINGS: impressed on base, “MOORCROFT / BURSLEM / ENGLAND / M57”; signed on base with William Moorcroft’s green script signature
